Designing a scalable pilot to drive sustainable production and industrial growth in the Nordics.
The client, a leading hydrogen-based green steel producer asked Xynteo to assess new production sites and develop a regional circular value chain that connected energy, steel, and industry to underpin a commercial scale-up plan. Select regions in the Nordics have a structural green energy surplus (with some of the lowest energy prices in Europe), large iron ore reserves, and growing domestic demand for steel products to realise their industrial offshore wind ambitions.
The region is ideally placed to produce green steel through a circular value chain from offshore wind to steel to industry, thereby generating commercial value, CO2 savings, and local green jobs.

Flagship green steel production and consumption pilot designed
The initiative
The key objectives for the engagement:
- Capture insights from senior political and business leaders and craft a common vision
- Develop a detailed forecast of energy demand, supply and price projections through to 2040
- Design a flagship pilot centred around 2m tonnes per annum DRI green production and consumption
Xynteo’s role
Stakeholder engagement:
- Led interviews and roundtables with senior leaders and policymakers across the Nordics
- Built cross-sector alignment towards a common vision for a circular steel value chain
Site assessments:
- Forecasted energy demand, supply and price projections through to 2040
- Identified surplus locations, prices, and grid infrastructure for the initiative
Pilot design:
- Developed a flagship circular green steel pilot that integrated offshore wind energy with steel manufacturing
