We urgently need new business models to transform all sectors of our economies. This will mean blending climate change insights with deep experience in systemic transformation.
Change that flows from leaders, through their companies and spreads throughout the systems in which they operate.
- Leaders: visionary leaders who understand the opportunities net-zero transition brings and have the capabilities to transform their companies and systems in which they operate
- Companies: global companies’ decarbonisation targets, governance structure, corporate strategies, innovation activities and operating models are fully aligned with the global climate goals
- Systems: collaboration across the value chain including supply chains, customers, finance, other businesses and wider stakeholders to transform sectors and systems
In our experience at Xynteo, the successfully achieving this level of change demands leadership that can think contextually, coordinate diverse perspectives, collaborate across silos, and facilitate complex decisions. Net-zero transition adds another level of complexity, as it requires much more than announcing a new climate target. We tackle this challenge by delivering programmes for leadership teams in major global companies to help them build capabilities alongside peers from different sectors, drawing on new skills and tools, experiential learning, coaching, and mentorship. We also develop culture programmes to help leaders translate their vision and purpose into leadership behaviours, and cement intention with action through projects.
Companies should fully align their targets, governance structure, corporate strategies, innovation activities and operating models with the global climate goals
The demands of the coming decade including rapidly decarbonising our global economy represent important new growth markets; however, companies must apply their capabilities to new challenges in order to remain competitive. We help executives with strategic mandates, to learn from the frontiers of growth, building growth strategies in prospective markets, including around low-carbon solutions. We also run innovation processes to identify new products, services and business models that can achieve decarbonisation while delivering top line growth.
Final step is a strong collaboration across the value chain
What we have learned by working with global leaders and major companies for decades is that change can be accelerated through a collaborative and systematic approach. For instance, our Europe Delivers partnership, which is led by the CEOs and Executive Leaders of Verizon, Yara, DB Schenker, Scania, Mastercard, Xynteo and Shell, is working towards a net-zero, socially just, competitive future for Europe. One of our Europe Delivers projects, BioAdvantage Europe is driven bottom-up by the private sector and takes a comprehensive end-to-end perspective of the bioeconomy.
Similarly, our India2022 partnership of global and Indian businesses aims to address some of the most pressing challenges facing India, including making business-led, large-scale, systemic change that accelerates the greater availability and utilisation of sustainable, innovative sources of energy, and energy efficient solutions to support the Government of India's goals.
Strong business leadership can pave the way to net-zero
Today, there are some great visionary leaders who are committed to addressing some of the world’s most complex challenges. For instance, N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons has shared his views on what Europe needs to do to play an even more progressive role in the world, including taking sustainability ambition into everyday business; and Herbert Diess, Chairman of Volkswagen Group and CEOs from 11 other European companies jouned forces for a zero-carbon future through the CEO Alliance.
We’re also proud to be working with these leaders, such as Henrik Henriksson, CEO of Scania Group on decarbonising transport, Huibert Vigeveno, Executive Vice President of Shell on decarbonising our energy systems, and Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara on creating systemic change in food and agriculture, and many more.
Though these leaders are paving the way, we need more global companies to accelerate and increase their impact on climate change.
