Unilever CEO Paul Polman and Accion CEO Michael Schlein talk purposeful business

In a panel moderated by Xynteo’s Rick Wheatley during the first Square of the Xynteo Exchange/Norway, Unilever CEO Paul Polman and Accion CEO Michael Schlein discussed whether purposeful capital is an oxymoron.

Representing ‘purposeful business’ and ‘purposeful capital’ respectively, Paul and Michael interrogated the relationship between the private sector and the global financial system that empowers and regulates its behaviour.

Paul said that, “We have a development agenda, called the Sustainable Development Goals, that probably has one of the highest returns mankind has every seen.”

Michael Schlein said, “the health of a company is really a function of its horizon. How do you resist those quarterly pressures, which are enormous, and get leaders to think about 5, 1o or 20 years?”

Together, they explored ways in which it is possible to harness the power of financial capital to improve the wealth and welfare of all, today and for generations to come.
