The demand for food is projected to increase by 50-70 percent by 2050. The current food system – which is responsible for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions – places a massive strain on land, water, energy, and other inputs; partly because most farmers are unable to access, analyse, and utilise available agricultural data to produce food efficiently. At the same time, upstream and downstream food waste causes significant losses in nutrients and value. With these significant threats to agricultural produce, it is clear that future demands cannot be met without radical changes in the food system.
About the Yara Studio
Sustainable food production is an essential part of improving human health, reducing contributions to climate change and preserving biodiversity and natural resources. Currently, a transformation is unfolding across the food system, and new technologies and approaches are allowing us to produce more food with less inputs and resources. Effective action will require science-based solutions, new partnerships and models of collaboration among key stakeholders, within and across sectors.
At the 2019 Xynteo Exchange/Norway, Yara will host a Studio that will work to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable food system. Four problem areas spanning the food system will be scrutinised by leaders – from business, government, civil society, and start-ups – with an aim to develop solutions and expedite the move towards more sustainable food production. These issues cover capturing externalities and enhancing circularity in the food system, increasing access to and value from agricultural data, and leveraging links between the food and land systems to achieve the 2030 climate goals.
