Achieving the potential of non-energy biomaterials
Some of the most promising new bio-based products require significant further maturation before they are market-ready, while many mature technologies are not deployed commercially because of barriers of cost, availability and supply chain infrastructure.
Non-energy related bio-based materials and products are not achieving their potential. From building materials to advanced bio-chemicals, there is a wide range of bio-based products that could have strong commercial performance at scale.
Many of these have commercial synergies with biomass-derived energy and transport fuel. But for a range of reasons, commercial deployment is lagging behind this potential, and is in many respects lagging behind biomass use in the energy and transport sectors. Even some of the most promising new products require significant further maturation before they are market-ready, and some mature technologies are not being deployed commercially because of other barriers.
