Natural gas in the low-carbon economy
13/09/2010
Twice a year the companies that make up the Global Leadership & Technology Exchange meet to share knowledge of low-carbon innovation and explore collaborative opportunities to pursue low-carbon growth. On 9-10 June 2010 representatives of the 16 GLTE partners convened in Stavanger, Norway. The meeting was hosted by Statoil.
At the exchange we asked ourselves: what is the role of the oil and gas industry in eforts to build a lower-carbon economy? In particular, how can the innovative capacity of the industry and its suppliers be leveraged to unlock low-carbon growth in other parts of the world economy? How can the industry harness its operational experience and technical competence to reduce its own carbon footprint, including by pushing forward with CCS and developing renewable energy? Is natural gas a bridge or a destination fuel?
The pages that follow contain two briefings that address the questons above, drawing on the discussions in Stavanger. For many if not most of the partcipants, the key takeaway was the surging interest in the potental of natural gas to lower the CO2 emissions of the world’s energy mix. This emphasis is reflected in the space allocated to each briefing.
Photos from the exchange, as well as some memorable quotes, are sprinkled throughout the text to give a favour of the dialogue. At the back of this document, we have also included some information about the Xyntéo-GLTE Low-Carbon Leadership Board.
