GLTE Shanghai briefing available now

Back in November, GLTE partners met in Shanghai to discuss two crucial levers to low-carbon growth: China and electrification. This briefing revisits these themes, recalling memorable images of the meeting as well as insights from participants.

The document opens with the stand-out speech by Victor Gao, Director of the China National Association of International Studies, outlining eight ways of gaining better understanding of China. In the 1980s Dr Gao served as English interpreter to Deng Xiaoping.

The next section highlights China’s ambitions in developing a cleaner energy mix and discusses how its efforts to realise these goals are widening energy options for the world as a whole.

The third and final section assesses another force for change – electrification.  Expanding use of electricity from low-carbon energy sources – from renewables to nuclear and fossil-based energies deployed in tandem with CCS – could help us meet burgeoning energy demand while building a more sustainable energy mix.

Particularly exciting is the application of electricity to transportation – high-speed trains, electric cars and even e-bikes all could deliver significant emissions cuts while contributing enormously to quality of life in cities all around the world.
